American Hospital Formulary Service (AHFS) Drug Information
A reference that provides accurate and complete drug information on nearly all prescription drugs markets in the US. Published yearly by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists in Bethesda, Maryland.
Brand (trade) Name (Proprietary Name)
A drug name chosen by the drug company and usually a registered trademark owned by that specific manufacturer, also known as the proprietary name.
Chemical Name
The drug name that describes the drug’s chemical structure.
Controlled Substances
Drugs that are described in five schedules, or categories. Schedule I drugs are not approved for medical use, Schedule II-V drugs have accepted medical use.
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
The section of the Department of Justice charged with the role of being the nation’s sole legal drug enforcement agency.
Drug Facts and Comparisons (F&C)
A drug reference that contains information on almost all drugs marketed in the US.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
The government agency whose job it is to monitor and regulate the manufacture and marketing of drugs and to ensure that all drugs are tested for harmful effects, have labels with accurate information, and enclose detailed literature with the drug packaging that explains adverse side effects.
Generic name (Nonproprietary name)
The official or nonproprietary name for a drug.
Malfeasance
Giving the correct rug but by the wrong route, resulting in the client’s death.
Misfeasance
Negligence; giving the wrong drug or drug dose, resulting in the client’s death.
Nonfeasance
Omission; omitting a drug dose that results in the clients death.
Pharmacology
The study of the effects of chemical substances on living tissues
Physicians’ Desk Reference (PDR):
A yearly publication that lists several thousand drugs with complete drug information given by pharmaceutical companies.
United States Pharmacopeia – Drug Information (UPS-DI)
Drug Information (UPS-DI) – A three volume set available in most hospitals and pharmacies. Volumes IA and IB provide drug information for the health care provider. Volume II gives drug information for the client.
United States Pharmacopeia National Formulary (USP-NF):
the current authoritative source for drug standards, revised every 5 years by a group of experts in nursing, pharmaceutics, pharmacology, chemistry, and microbiology.
