Penicillin G (Bicillin LA)
Action: Destroys bacteria by weakening the bacterial cell wall
Therapeutic Uses: Pneumonia, Meningitis, Pharyngitis (gram-positive cocci) and syphilis. Prophylaxis bacterial endocarditis
S/A Effects: Allergies, Anaphylaxis, Renal Impairment,
Hyperkalemia/dysrythmias w/ high doses of penicillin G.
Interventions: Observe client for 30min post administration, monitor I/O, cardiac status and electrolytes. Take med w/full glass of water 1hr before meals and 2hrs after
Contra: Kidney dysfunction. If allergic contraindication for cephalosporin and imipenem.
Med/Food interactions: No aminoglycosides: Penicillin inactivates it. Ampicillin decreases oral contraceptives
