Ephedrine (E), aka adrenaline
-prototype
-beta 1 and 2 also have alpha effects, but is considered to be the prototype of beta drugs
*D.O.C for anaphylaxis--available as EPI pen (cardiac stimulation beta 1; bronchodialation beta 2)
-Control bleeding by constriction during surguries.
-prolong effect of local anesthesia by reducing absorp.
Albuterol/proventil, ventolin

-mostly used INH, also PO
-short acting
-used OL for hyperkalemia in dialysis patients, muscular distrophy, stopping preterm labor.
Salmeterol/Seravent
-Long acting
-used for nocturnal asthma b/c it lasts 12 hours
-long acting beat agonists (LABA) have been shown to increase risk of death from asthma related causes.
Major SE of beta drugs
CNS stimulation--nervous, anxiety, h/a, insomnia, restless, tremors.

CV--palps, tachycardia, arrhythmias (esp for beta 2 drugs taken higher than dose).
