Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
Pregnancy Class B
Oral, Rectal supp.,
Reduces pain, fever by Inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the cns and peripherally. does not produce gastric irritation or ulceration, and has a minimal anti-inflammatory effect. Major side effect- liver damage
Acetaminophen overdose- gastric lavage (stomach pumping)within 4 hours of ingestion/activated charcoal to inhibit absorption. Acetylcysteine (mucomyst) given orally as antidote best within 8-10 but might still effective up to 36 hours.
acetaminophen adverse effects
drowsiness/stimulation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, hepatotoxicity, hepatic seizure (overdoese), GI bleeding, renal failure, rash. Interacts with St. Johns wort (reduces effect); barbituates/hydantoins-decreased effects/increased hepatotoxicity.
Acetaminophen toxicity symptoms- cyanosis, anemia, neutropenia, jaundice, pancytopenia, CNS stimulation, delirium followed by vascular collapse, seizures, coma, death.
