MECH:
agonist @ mu, kappa & (maybe) Delta receptors

CONTRAS:
resp condit
high intracranial press
CNS depression

ADVERSES:
resp arrest / DEPRESS.
apnea
shock / coma

**NOT in premis, or during premi labor**

**titrate dose up**

**MONITOR VITALS (RR)**

**NALOXONE = Antidote **

MILD NARCOTIC AGENT

mild - moderate pain
cough suppression (lower dose)

MECH:
Acts @ spec. opiod rec. in CNS = analgesia, euphoria, & sedation

CONTRAS:
not given w/ other narcotics
if pt must clear throat w/ cough (pneumonia)
same as Morphine

ADVERSES:
same as morphine - less severe
as anti-tussive: xerostomia, sedation, N & V & C

**don't give to patients who NEED to cough**

**elderly - very sensitive to narcotics**

** Increased fall risk**

agonist @ kappa recepts, (like morphine) , wk ant @ mu recepts.

CONTRAS:

hepatic dis.
head injury (ups intracranial press)
MI (never give)

ADVERSES:
N&V
CNS - dizzy / euphoria
RESP & CIRC DEPRESS.

**NALOXONE is antidote**

**no alcohol & other CNS depressants**
