Ampoule (amp)
A small glass vial sealed to keep contents sterile. Usually used for a single dose of medicaiton, used for SC, I.M. and IV meds.
Capsule (cap)
A gelatin container in which a drug is enclosed.
Compound (comp)
Two or more chemicals united chemically into one substance.
Elixir (elix)
A sweetened, usually alcoholic liquid used with medicinal agents.
Enteric Coated (EC)
A coating on a drug which permits it to pass through the stomach and dissolve inthe small intestine. eg. entrophen.
Inhaler
A device used to administer medication by inhaling.
Irrigating Solutions (lavage)
The cleansing of a canal cavity or wound by washing with water or other fluids (sterile water, normal saline) to remove irritants or poisons.
Gavage
Introducing of liquid food into the stomach by way of a nasogastric (NG) tube placed either through the nose or mouth.
Lozenge
Solid medication held in mouth until it dissolves.
Ointment (ung)
A semi solid, usually greasy and mediatec prepartion for application to the skin.
Placebo
An inactive substqance resembling a medication but with no medicinal effect.
Suppository (supp)
A medicated substance mixed in a solid base that melts when placed in a body opening. Usually placed in the vagina or rectum.
Tablet (tab)
A solid dose of a drug in a disk form.
Topical

drops (gtt) or ointment (ung)
A direct application of a medicaiton to the skin, ear, eye, or other body part.
Vial
A small glass container for medication.
