Normal Physiological Changes: GI
1. Changes in dentition and reduced saliva production alter dietary choices. Normal decrease in smell and taste alter dietary choices.
2. Absorption of foods and drugs generally decreases because of a decrease in gastric acid and atrophy of gastric mucosal lining.
3. Normal gastrointestinal motility is reduced. (May off-set reduced absorption.)
Normal Physiological Changes: Renal
1. General decrease in blood flow to kidneys and reduction in kidney function. Drugs take longer to excrete and may build-up in body.
2. Normal concentration of body water decreases. Drink water. Avoid chronic use of analgesics, especially NSAIDs.
Normal Physiological Changes: Hepatic
1. General decrease in liver function, especially liver enzymes which metabolize drugs. When multiple drugs are taken, they may compete for the same enzymes for metabolism, causing high levels of drug to accumulate and cause toxic effects.
2. Drugs that are toxic to the liver: acetaminophen (especially true if alchol is consumed frequently); kava kava, black cohash, niacin
Drugs inhibiting normal liver metabolism & causing frequent toxicity:
Generic name Trade Name
Antifungal drugs:
Ketoconazole Nizoral
Itraconazole Sporanox
Metronidazole Flagyl

Antibiotic drugs:
