Why does taking food before drinking help you not get drunk.
Delays delivery to jejunum where it is absorbed and allows some metabolism.
What is ethanol's main mechanism of action.
Increase activity of GABA. It binds receptor and increases GABA binding to its receptor Decreases activity of glutamate pathways.
What BAC can cause death
0.45 or higher in non-professional drinkers.
CV functions with ethanol.
Cutaneous vasodilation (makes you only feel warm), core temp decreases, low amounts increase HDL and decrease LDL, approx two drinks per day are beneficial.
Renal effects.
Pee more by high fluid and ADH inhibition.
Liver effects of ethanol
Acute use engorges hepatocytes with fat. You get two NADH per each ethanol which is reduction. You are at a more reduced state overall and B-oxidation of fatty acids require NAD+. Get fat in cells. Ethanol also damages mitochondria. Can inhibit ability to metabolize carbs and fats as well. More calories get made into fat.
Disulfiram
inhibits aldehyde dehydrogenase. Gives you a hangover. Face feels hot, flushed and scarlet in appearance. Intense throbbing in head an dneck. may have headache. You can drink through it though.
Acamprosate
(calcium acetyl homotaurinate)
Restores normal NMDA signal tone that was high. Reduces craving. Possibly better at maintaining abstinence than naltrexone.
Fomepizole
inhibitor of ADH. Can be used to treat methanol and thylene glycol poisoning.
Alcohol drug interactions.
Augment other CNS depressants. Get in the way of other metabolism. At low concentrations it can induce CYP2E1 metabolism but at high doses it blocks the effect on other drugs.
What does alcohol do to acetaminophen
It is converted by CYP2E1 to a toxic metabolite then by GSH to unharmful. Alcohol blocks GSH and induces CYP 2E1. Oh nooo, liver damage now baby. Don't take tylenol after you drink foo.
One beer per how many hours can keep you at .08 BAC.
1.3 hours. Be safe kids.
