2.0.0.44 Figure 2.4 Anterior Muscles of the Torso (Superficial Muscles only).
The figure below shows exactly where structures listed appear. Not all structures can be seen in the angles demonstrated. It is not necessary to memorize this figure. However, all of the terms which appear were chosen because of their occurrence in medical transcription. If you transcribe reports which deal with this part of the body, you will see these terms often. Again, our emphasis in anatomy and physiology is on spelling and a general familiarity with these terms. Please become familiar with the terms shown on the figure and do the following exercise.

The linea alba and umbilicus are labeled in the figure below; however, they are not muscles. Since they are terms that you will use often in medical transcription, we have included them here for you to identify where they are and how to spell them. Linea alba means literally "white line" and is the term for the tendinous line down the middle of the anterior abdominal wall directly between the two rectus muscles. The umbilicus, as annotated, is the belly button.

The muscles and terms found on the figure below are for the superficial muscles of the torso only. There are many additional muscles located in this region of the body. If you come across a term which is not delineated below, look in your medical dictionary to find it.

Figure 2.4 pg 44. Name the 7 Superficial Anterior Muscles of the Torso and the 2 that are listed but are not muscles just terms.
1. trapezius(neck)
2. deltoid
3. pectoralis major
4. serratus anterior(torso)
5. linea alba(not a muscle, just a term you will see often)
6. sternocleidomastoid(neck)
7. external oblique(torso)
8. umbilicus (belly button)(not a muscle, just a term you will see often)
9. rectus abdominis
