Describe renal control of acid/base balance
In the proximal tubule (90%), H2O+CO2 -> H2CO3 -> H+ + HCO3-. H+ is traded for Na+ by a basolateral exchanger, and Na+ and HCO3- are pushed back into the blood
Describe the role of NH3 secretion in acid/base balance
Secreted NH3 + H+ -> NH4+, which cannot diffuse back accross the membrane, and thus serves as a H+ sink.
