Why would petroleum engineers need to learn about organic chemistr? How do you think you will use the information from Chapter 1 in your future job as a petroleum engineer?
Petroleum is composed of organic chemicals, and studying the properties of the fluids we are going to produce is the main idea of the petroleum industry
What is the difference between organic and inorganic chemistry? Why is the study of carbon so important?
Inorganic: compounds obtained from minerals
Organic: compounds obtained from living organisms. Carbon makes up most living things
Dfine structural theory and homologous series. Name two types of chemical bonds and explain why molecules tend to bond together to form compounds.
Structual theory is concerned with the way in which atoms are combined to form molecules.
Homologous series are groups for organic chemicals in which molecular structures and physical and chemical properties are similar.
There are covalent and ionic bonds. Bonds form to make the outer shell stable.
Explain the process of covalent bonding. Why do covalent bonds stay together? Explain the difference between single, double, and triple bonds.
Atoms share electrons to fill their outer shell. In this case, there is no atom that can give electrons to have full outer shell therefore the two atoms share electrons to fill the outer shell for both.
Single: atoms share 1 electrons
Double: atoms shares 2 electrons
Triple: atom shares 3 electrons
What is a valence angle? What is the typical valence angle for carbon atoms?
The angle between atoms in a molecule and it's normally 109.5 degrees
What conventions do we use to name organic compounds?
International union of pure and applied chemisty? (IUPAC)

Give an example of an alkane and describe the distinguishing features of molecules of the family, other names for the family, and the general formula of alkanes.
Need to figure this out
What are structual isomers?
the same compound with different configuration

Need to figure this out
What are the differences between alkynes and dienes?
They have different functional groups (meaning different properties)
What are structual isomers?
the same compound with different configuration
What do the names aromatic and aliphatic mean?
Aromatics : Compounds like benzene
Aliphatics: alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and cyclics

Aliphatics: alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and cyclics
Which cyclic compounds are most commonly found in petroleum?
Condensed rings such as decalin, bicycloocane, dodecahydofluorene
What is the difference between cycloaklanes, cycloalkenes, and cycloalkadienes?
cycoalkanes : alkane in a cycle
cycloalkenes: cycle with double bond
cycloalkdienes: cycle with two double bonds.
Define Phase?
Phase is any homogeneous and physically distinct part of a system which is separated from other parts of the system by definite boudning surfaces.
How are physical properties classified?
internal and external
Which cyclic compounds are most commonly found in petroleum?
Condensed rings such as decalin, bicycloocane, dodecahydofluorene
Which three factors are most important to the physical behavior of individual molecules?
Pressure, Temperature, and intermolecular forces
