Nutritional Health
Health effects caused by insufficient nutrition intake or storage of nutrients. It can also be caused by over-nutrition
Malnutrition
An excess in nutrient intake or stores that results in obesity, hypertension, or toxic levels of some vitamins or minerals
Over-nutrition
Insufficient nutrition intake or storage of nutrients
Under-nutrition
Scientific measurements of the body. Including height, weight, and measurements of body fat, and muscle composition.
Anthropometric Measurments
The most outer layer of the skin. Contains 5 sublayers and contains special cells that give the skin its pigment
Epidermis
The second layer of the skin which gives the skin its thoughness and its elasticity. Contains nerves, blood vessels, lymph vessels, hair follicles, sweat glands, oil glands, and sensory receptors.
Dermis
Loosely connective tissue that stores half of the body's fat cells. The cushion against trauma and insulates the body
Subcutaneous Tissue
Produce sweat, a mixture of salts, fatty acids, proteins, and water. Found in the axillary and anogenital regions
Apocrine Glands
Produce sebum. Distributed across the body except on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
Sebaceous Glands
Tiny White facial papules that are caused by the collection of sebum in the openings of hair follicles. Found on infants only
Milia
Found on 70% of pregnant women. Hyper pigmented patches on the face. "mask of pregnancy"
Chloasma
A dark line that runs from the umbilicus to the pubic area in pregnant women
Linea Nigra
Loss of color in the skin. Caused by absence of oxygenated hemoglobin
Pallor
Blue color in skin and appendages due to loss of perfusion to tissues.
Cyanosis
Reddening of the skin due to increased blood flow to an area
Erythema
Yellow undertone caused by increased billirubin. Normally seen in the eyes and mucosa l membranes
Jaundice
Profuse sweating caused by physical exertion, fever, pain, or stress
Diaphoresis
A accumulation of fluid that makes the skin look puffy or pitted and tight
Edema
Commonly called bruising this is a form of edema
Ecchymosis
The progressive loss of hair form the scalp or other areas of the body
Alopecia
Caused by hypoxia or impaired peripheral tissue perfusion over a long period. The ends of fingers become enlarged and the able of the nail becomes grater than 160 degrees losing diamond form when compared
Clubbing
Flat, red, or purple freckles that are 1 to 3mm in diameter. Caused by minute hemorrhages
Petechiae
Raised Irregular shaped legion similar to a bruise except that the skin looks elevated not just dark
Hematoma
Patches of flat non-palpable changes in skin color that 1cm with a circumscribed border
Ex: freckles
Macule
Elevated, solid, palpable masses with a circumscribed border. Smaller than 0.5cm

Ex: Elevated moles or wartes
Papules
Elevated Solid, hard or soft palpable masses that extend deeper into dermis than a papule. Circumscribed border that are 0.5 to 2cm in diameter
Nodule
Elevated Solid, hard or soft palpable masses that extend deeper into dermis than a papule. May have irregular border and may be larger than 2 cm
Tumor
Elevated fluid filled, round or oval shaped, palpable masses. Translucent walls. Smaller than 0.5cm
Vesicle
Elevated fluid filled, round or oval shaped, palpable masses. Translucent walls. Lager than 0.5cm
Bulla
Elevated often reddish area with a irregular border caused by the diffuse of tissues
Ex: Insect bites
Wheal
Elevated pus filled vesicle or bulla with a circumscribed border

Ex: Acne
Pustule
Elevated, encapsulated, fluid filled mass that originates in the subcutaneous tissue or dermis
Cyst
Deep, irregular are of skin loss that extends into the dermis or subcutaneous tissue. May bleed
Ulcer
Elevated and irregular darkended area of excess scar tissue caused by excessive collagen formation during the healing process
Keloid
Thickening of the skin in dry, silvery, scaly patches.
Psoriasis
Amount of time it takes for capillary bed on the nail to refill after perfusion has been taken away then given back
Capillary Refill
Record of a diet take over a period of time.
Dietary Diet
Fine downy hair that newborns posses at birth. It quickly falls off. It is used for warmth in the womb
Lanugo
Any abnormality in the tissue of an organism (in layman's terms, "damage"), usually caused by disease or trauma
Lesion
Itching caused by dry skin that increases with age

Bowing of legs in children associated with poor nutrition
