apply the brakes as hard as you can without locking them. if the brakes lock you will feel the vehicle skid. ease off the brake pedal until the vehicle stops skidding.

turn while braking. it is helpful if you can turn and stop.
what does the ABS system do?
allows you stop without skidding.
to avoid a collision what is usually better to do than stopping?
turning off the road with both hands securely on the steering wheel.

step on the brake pedal and let up. turn the steering wheel. do not lock up the front wheels.
what is a good thing to do if a vehicle is about the hit you from the side or from behind?
speed up if there is room in front of you. be sure to slow down once the danger has passed.
what should you do if you run off the road?
grip the steering wheel firmly, slowly reduce speed and keep your vehicle on a safe course, and when it is safe to do so turn back onto traffic without oversteering
how do you handle driving through a curve?
first slow down, obey the speed sign if posted, then increase your speed gradually as you come out of the curve.

if the way ahead is clear slowly pull up the parking brake. you may need to shift into a lower gear. if you are on a hill or mountain grade, look for something to side swipe. use your horns and lights to show everyone your out of control.
what do you do if a tire blows?
grip the steering wheel, slow down, then brake smoothly. slowly move to the shoulder and limp along til you find a safe place to change the tire.
what should you do if your headlights go out?
try the dimmer switch, flick the headlight switch, turn signals, or emergency flashers.
what should you do if your power steering fails?
grip the steering wheel firmly and and bring to the side of the road. you might have to push the brakes hard if you have power steering.
is it okay to turn the vehicle's ignition to the "lock" position while it's in motion?
no, you could lose control of your vehicle.
what should you do if the hood flies up?
brake smoothly, go to the shoulder of the road. you may have to look out the left window. on some vehicles you can see through the gap under the hood.
what should you do if your accelerator sticks?
first try to apply your brakes with a lot of pressure. if that doesn't work then signal and steer off the road and turn the ignition off, shift the vehicle into neutral if that doesn't work. if you are have a lot of room on the road ahead try pulling the gas pedal up with your foot, never try to do this with your hand.
what should you do if your engine overheats?
stop in safe place on the side of the road. shift your vehicle into neutral or park. raise the hood and do not try to remove the radiator cap. idle the engine to increase air flow. turn on the heater until the temperature gets back to normal. if after a short time the temperature doesn't drop you may have to have your vehicle towed to a service station.
what should you do if you crash your vehicle into a utility pole?
assume there is a power line down and it is energized and extremely dangerous. stay in the vehicle if possible, you should be safe if you can.
what should you do if the vehicle is on fire?
do not touch the vehicle and the ground at the same time. open the door and jump free of the vehicle with your feet together and hands and arms close together. continue until you are totally away from the vehicle.
what should you do if you witness a collision involving a utility pole?
stay away from the vehicle. don't touch any passengers, nearby fences, or wires. call 911 and wait for them to arrive.
