Somatic PNS Anatomy:
All somatic MOTOR neurons:

**Innervate skeletal muscle cells
**Use ACh as their NT
**Have cell bodies in the brain stem or the ventral portion of the spinal cord

All somatic SENSORY neurons:
**long dendrite extending from a sensory receptor toward the soma, located just outside the CNS in a dorsal root ganglion (just dorsal of the spinal cord).
**contain their first synapse in the CNS.
Sympathetic Autonomic PNS Anatomy:
General function: Fight or flight, mobilize energy

Location of preganglionic soma: thoracolumbar (thoracic and lumbar spinal cord)

Preganglionic axon: Short, ACh

Ganglia: Close to cord; far from target

Postganglionic axon: Long, NE
Parasympathetic Autonomic PNS Anatomy:
General function: Rest and digest, store energy

Location of preganglionic soma: craniosacral (brainstem and sacral spinal cord)

Preganglionic axon: Long, ACh
**"Para- long pre-"

Ganglia: Far from cord; close to target

Postganglionic axon: Short (ACh)
