What is malignant hyperthermia?
Life threatening, hereditary reaction to inhaled anesthesia.
S/S of malignant hyperthermia
Fever, muscle tetany, perspiration, lactic acidosis, or hypoxemia.
What is the treatment for malignant hyperthermia?
Dantrolene/Dantrium
Pack in ice. May run iced saline into stomach or bladder.
What may a person with chronic pain look like?
Flat affect, fatigue, decreased physical movement or mobility, socially withdrawn, irritable.
What does the PQRST of pain stand for?
Provokes, palliative, precipitating
Quality (Sharp, dull, achy, tight)
Region, radiation
Severity (0/10)
Timing (AM, PM)
How does Albumin affect medications?
If Albumin is low, a person may be malnourished. This may not give the medication enough protein to bind to, causing toxicity.
If the hematocrit is high?
The person may be dehydrated. Blood would be more concentrated with RBC.
If hematocrit is low?
The person may have too much fluid, or may be bleeding. Blood would contain less RBC.
If the person is anemic after surgery, what must we know?
Estimated blood loss
What is hypercapnia?
Increased CO2 levels. Caused by not breathing deep enough.
What is the cause of hypoventilation?
CNS depression caused by anesthesia, decreased resp muscle tone, less resp effort.
What is the first thing to assess if PT is confused?
O2 sats
What can a decrease in cardiac output lead to?
Pulmonary edema
What is atelectasis?
Alveolar colapse
S/S post op pneumonia
Crackles in lobes, fever, chest pain, productive cough, increase in WBC's.
S/S of pulmonary emboli
Chest pain, SOB, increased HR and RR, decreased BP, pallor, cyanosis, decrease in O2 sats, and death.
S/S of DVT
Pain, redness, warmth, heat, swelling, edema
Why should we not raise the knees of a post op patient?
It decreases venous return.
What kind of medications cause urinary retention?
Opioids, anesthesia, or anticholinergics
What is wound dehiscence?
Separation of the wound edges.
What is wound evisceration?
When the wound opens up and internal structures or organs protrude.
