easy: How do you find the atomic number of an atom?
the number of protons is the number
medium: What is a characteristic of all alkali metals and alkaline earth metals?
they form alkaline solutions when mixed with water
easy: what are the three basic components of an atom?
Protons, electrons and neutrons.
what is an element?
an element is a pure substance that cannot be broken into any other substances by chemical or physical means.
how can you tell one element form another
by their physical properties and chemical properties.
Whar holds atoms together in a molecule?
a chemical bond.
How can oxygen be both an element and a molecule?
Its an element when its only 1 atom and a molecule when it's 2 or more atoms.
Why are compounds a kind of pure stubstance?
they cannot be broken down/separated.
how are compounds different form the elements that make them up?
When elements are chemically combined, they form compounds having properties that are different from those of uncombined elements.
Is a mixture a pure substance?
no it isnt. it can be separated.
How do mixtures differ from compounds?
substances in mixtures keep their properties and substances can be separated. substances in a compounds can do neither.
How do heterogeneous and homogenous differ?
heterogenous mixtures have parts taht can be seen. you cant see all the parts in a homogenous mixture without a microscope.
What are valence electrons?
Electrons with the highest energy levels. The number of valence electrons determine many properties of that element, including ways in which atoms can bond with other atoms.
How little is a electron compared to a proton?
an electron is 1/836 of a proton.
what is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is a chemical bond formed when two atoms share electrons.
what is an ionic bond?
An ionic bond is the attraction between two oppositely charged ions.
