Name some reasons for training in periodontics
Wide spread disease (up to 85% of population); pts more aware of periodontal disease; legal considerations; income
Name the 5 components of the periodontium
Gingiva, JE, PDL, Cementum, Alveolar process
Define gingiva
that part of the oral mucosa that covers the alveolar process of the jaws and surrounds the necks of the teeth
what is the marginal gingiva?
that portion of the gingiva surrounds the neck of the tooth demarcated from the attached gingiva by a shallow depression called the free gingival groove opposite the coronal margin of th JE.
Forms the soft tissue wall of the gingival sulcus |
what is attached gingiva?
gingiva that is continuous with marginal gingiva and extends to the mucogingival junction on the facial and lingual aspect of the mandible and the facial aspect of the maxilla. In the palate, there is no demarcation between the attached gingival and the mastacatory mucosa
what are some characteristics of attached gingiva?
Firm, resilient, and tightly boudn to the periosteum of alveolar bone.
what is the interdental gingiva/papilla?
pyramid shaped tissue that occupies the gingival embrasure
what is the gingival col?
a valley-like depression which connects the papillae.
conforms to the shape of the interproximal contact epithelium of the col is NON keratinized. |
define gingival sulcus
the space around the tooth bounded by the surfaces of the tooth on one side, the epithelial lining of the marginal gingival on the other side and the JE at the base
what are the clinical appearances of healthy gingiva?
Color: coral/pale pink varies according tothe degree of vascularity, epithelial keritinization, and pigmentation
contour: papillary: fill interproximal spaces. Marginal contours: gingival should slope coronally to end in a thin edge. M/D the gingival margins should be scalloped in form Consistency: firm, resilient, and tightly bound to underlying bone. (excpet for marginal gingival) Texture: stippling of the attched gingiva is present in varying degrees. "orange peel" not readily apparent in yound or old. |
What are the layers of the gingival epithelium?
Basal; Spinous (polyhedral shaped cells with intracellular bridges, increased cytoplasmic filaments and decreased # of MT); Granular (keratohyaline granules); Cornified (keratin) layer.
