Define debridement. What is excluded from it?
/it is the mechanical removal of detecable deposits with superficial removal of cementum. Doesnt include root planing.
What are the three types of ultrasonics?
1. sonic
2. piezoelectric
3. magnetostrictive
For sonic type, What range is there sound in? Hz? What type of air do they use? What type of movement? Which surfaces are active?
Audible range
2500-7000 Hz
compressed air
orbital or elliptical movement
all surfaces active
How does a kHz relate to a Hz?
1 kHz equals 1000 Hz
For piezoelectric type, what range is there sound in? Hz? What type of air? what type of movement? Which surfaces are active
above audible range
29000-50000 HHz
ceramic transducer
linear tip movement
lateral surfaces more active
For magnetostrictive type, what range is there sound in? what type of air? what type of movement? which surfaces are active?
above audible range
20000-42000 hz
ferromagnetic transducer
elliptical movement
all surface active
Prophy-Jet is an air powder device for polishing which utilizes ________.
Na bicarbonate
SIU uses Parkell _________, which is autotuned at 30 kHz. What is the concern with using this over peizo?
Magnetostrictive, More heat is produced, thus water must be used for cooling.
What must you always do before inserting the inserts?
Must flush water for 1 minute, which lubricates and avoids overheating the tip.
/what are the four thing that the water control does?
1. regulates volume
2. cools stack and tip
3. lubricates for easy insertion
4. flushes debris
Describe the two controls that are found in the clinic? Which one is distal? mesial?
Water is distal, turn clockwise to turn off
Power is mesial, turn clockwise to increase..
What are the two rules regarding the power setting?
1. Always start at the lowest setting, and increase.
2. always use the lowest setting needed
Does the 25 kHz or the 30 Hz have a longer stack?
25.
What is the most common solution if the ultrasonic is leaking?
replace the O ring
Describe and define the stack.
The stack is a stack of metal plates that produces the vibration that occurs through the tip.
In regards to water tuning, what is in tune versus out of tune?
in tune- water spray, good for heavier debris removal.
out of tune- water drips out (too much), light debris removal and deplaquing.
What part of the ultrasonic has the max power? Therefore we use which surfaces?
The tip, the lateral surfaces.
What are the three inserts?
1. 10 universal (purple)
2. after 5 plus left (teal)
3. after 5 plus right (orange-red)
The twp after five tips are described as _____ tips. What are they best used for?
thin. interproximals areas, root concavities, developmental grooves, and access to deep pockets.
Which type of motion caan be used with the swivel inserts?
rolling motion.
What are diamond coated ultrasonic tips used for?
odontoplasty, removal of overhangs, surgical recontouring of bone.
What is of medical concern with patients and ultrasonics?
Pts with implantable cardiac devices could be at risk for the ultrasonic to interfere with the device. The general rule is to leave the ultrasonic and the power supply further than 4-6 inches away from the device. NO reports have been made of this occurring with a patient.
What are four medical conditions of pts that are of concern?
1. communicable diseases
2. medically compromised pts
3. pt with respiratory risk
4. pt with dysphagia or prone to gagging
What are some disaadvantages or advantages of inserts?
see notes
what are two ways to decrease aerosol prodduction?
pre procedural rinse
high spped suction
What grasp do we use with ultrasonics? what are the advantages?
light grasp,
increased tactile sensitivity
increased pt comfort
decreased fatigue
What is the general rule of tip activiation?
activate in mouth then move to tooth, always keep it moving
what are the three rules of tip adaptation?
parallel to tooth
angulation near zero
little or no lateral pressure
What are three ways to increase fluid evacuation and decrease aerosol production?
pt positioning
cupping technique
suction devices
