Square Unit
A unit for measuring area.
Perimeter
The distance around a closed figure.
Area
The number of square units needed to cover a region or figure.
Formula
An equation that shows a mathematical relationship.
Right Triangle
A triangle with one right angle.`
Base
A side of a polygon, usually the one at the bottom in a given position.
Height
The distance from the base to the top of a figure.
Circumference
The distance around a circle. The circumference is about 3 times the length of the diameter.
Pi
The ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. (Pi equals about 3.14 or 22/7)
Face
A flat side of a 3-dimensional figure.
Edge
A line segment where two faces of a 3-dimensional figure meet.
Vertex
The common point of the two rays of an angle, two sides of a polygon, or three or more edges of a 3-dimensional figure.
Prisms
A 3-dimensional figure with two parallel congruent bases. The rest of the faces are rectangles or parallelograms.
Examples: Cube, rectangular prism
Cube
A prism, all of whose faces are squares.
Rectangular Prism
A prism, all of whose faces are rectangles.
Triangular Prism
A prism with two parallel, congruent bases that are triangles.
Pyramids
A 3-dimensional figure that is shaped by triangles on a base.
Example: Square Pyramid, Triangular Pyramid
Triangular Pyramid
A pyramid whose base is a triangle.
Rectangular Pyramid
A pyramid whose bas is a rectangle.
Cylinder
A 3-dimensional figure with one curved surface and two circlular bases.
Cone
A 3-dimensional figure with one curved surface, one vertex, and one circular base.
Sphere
A 3-dimensional figure that is the set of all points that are a given distance from a fixed point.
Volume
The number of cubic units that fit inside a 3-dimensional figure.
