Colonial Pennsylvania
The 1600's - Early Pennsylvania. The time period after William Penn's founding but before the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
William Penn
1644-1718 - Englishman / Quaker - started Pennsylvania Colony based on his Quaker beliefs. Holy Experiment was based on: freedom, equality, representation.
Self-governing
People who live in a place and make their own laws.
Religious Freedom /
Religious Persecution
Penn wanted all people to choose their religious beliefs.
Great Law
Created by William Penn to prevent people from being persecuted for their religious beliefs.
Quakers / Society of Friends
Christian religion. Believed in equality. Promotes peace on earth and equality. No wars or fights, "Golden Rule"
Examples of equality that proved William Penn an independent thinker
1. Allowed Native Americans to keep their own laws and religion. 2. Only Englishman that paid Native Americans for land, even though English law didn't make people pay Native Americans. 3. Recognized Native Americans as his equal.
Lenni-Lenape / Woodland Indians/ Native Americans
Native people of Pennsylvania before the Europeans. Food-gatherers, hunters, fishermen and farmers. They got food and shelter from forests, animals and rivers.
They also learned to grow crops so they didn't have to hunt so much.
The Walking Purchase
An agreement between Penn's sons and Native Americans. The native Americans were cheated. **Marked end of friendly Native-American-colonists relationship.
Constitution
A document that guarantees freedom of religion, equality, and the right to representation.
Declaration of Independence
The document, written by Thomas Jefferson in Philadelphia in 1776, which declared that America was its own country, independent from England. Colonists did not recognize English king as their ruler.
Europeans
Early colonists were Dutch, German and English who learned to survive in America doing what the Native Americans taught them: growing crops and hunting wildlife.
