Pelvis
Space or compartment surrounded by the pelvic girdle.
What is the pelvis subdivided into?
Greater and lesser pelvis
What is the greater pelvis' function?
Provides protection to inferior abdominal viscera
What is the lesser pelvis' function?
Provides skeletal framework for the pelvic cavity and perineum.
What is the perineum?
Both the regions that contain the anus and genitalia and a shallow compartment deep to that area.
Pelvic girdle
Basin-shaped ring of bone connecting the vertebral column to the two femurs.
What are the primary functions of the pelvic girdle?
Bear weight of the upper body when sitting or standing.
Transfer weight from the axial to the lower appendicular skeleton for standing and walking. Provide attachment for muscles of posture and locomotion as well as those in the abdominal wall. |
What are the secondary functions of the pelvic girdle?
1. Contain and protect pelvic viscera
2. Support for the abdominopelvic viscera and pregnant uterus 3. Provide attachement for erectile bodies of external gentilia. 4. Provide attachemnt for muscles and membranes that assist in these functions by forming the pelvic floor and filling in the gaps that exist around it. |
The male pelvic girdle
heavier, thicker, and more prominent bone markings
The female pelvic girdle
Wider, shallower, and has a larger pelvic inlet and outlet. The subpubic angle is nearly a right angle in females; it is considerably less in males.

Pevlic Cavity
Located between the pelvic inlet superiorly and the pelvic diaphragm inferiorly and contains the terminal parts of the urinary and alimentary systems, internal genital organs and associated vascular and neural structures to supply both the pelvis and lower limbs.
Pelvic Floor is formed by what?
Bowl-or-funnel-shaped pelvic diaphragm
The pelvic diaphragm separates?
The pelvic cavity from the perineum and is amde up of the coccygeus and levator ani muscles and fascias covering these muscles.
The pelvic diaphragm
consists of coccygeus and levator ani muscles and the fascias covering the superior and inferior aspects of these muscles.
Coccygus muscles
Forms small part of the pelvic diaphragm that supports the pelvic viscera; flexes coccyx
Levator Ani
Puborectalis
Pubococcygeus Iliococcygeus Support the abdominopelvic viscera the puborectalis is particularly involved in maintainging fecal coninence. |
