Objective improvements in pulmonary and cardiac function
Pulmonary outcomes are variable. Sometimes there is a transient decrease followed by increase. VO2max improves slightly. Increase in stroke volume and right ventricular filling, and EKG abnormalities.
Complications from Nuss repair
Bar displacement (2 to 27%, improved after stabilizers were used to 5%), pneumothorax 1-7%, recurrence is rare 0.6%, cardiac perforation - rare.
Indications
Haller index >3.25, significant cardiopulmonary symptoms, cardiac compression, patient concern about appearance.
