Flow of Chapter 1
James begins with a greeting (1:1) and then encourages readers respond to the testing of their faith by having joy in trials (1:2–4) and looking for wisdom from God (1:5–8). Whether rich and poor they have an appropriate response (1:9–11). Two things are good to remember 1). There will be a reward for endurance (1:12) and 2) people are tempted by their own desires -not by God (1:13-18). When all is said and done, people need to be hearers and doers of the word,(1:19-25) practice true religion - caring for widows and orphans, & keep unstained from world (1:26, 27)
Flow of Chapter 2
James continues to dwell on social distinctions – particularly the sin of Partiality (2:1–13). He condemns preferring the wealthy over the poor in the assembly (2:1–7), gives the royal law of love (2:8–11) and commends acting in light of law of liberty – mercy over judgment (2:12–13). All this talk of mercy doesn’t mean that we are not to be working hard – faith without works is dead (2:14-20). James backs up a justification by works with examples of Abraham & Rahab (2:21–26).
Flow of Chapter 3
James warns those wanting to become teachers (1-2) and then warns about the dangers of the tongue
(3:1–12) The solution is wisdom from above (3:13–18)
Flow of Chapter 4
James warns against worldliness that is fed by the passions at war inside you (4:1–10), judging your brother (4:11-12) and boasting about tomorrow (4:13–17).
Flow of Chapter 5
James gives a warning to the rich (5:1–6) and then circles back around to trials… telling us to have patience in suffering (5:7–12). After discussing the prayer of faith (5:13–18), he encourages us to bring back a wandering sinner and so save his soul from death. (5:19–20)
