Body alignment
Positioning of the body so that the spine is not twisted or crooked
Contractures
A condition that occurs when a joint is held in the same position for too long a time; the tendons shorten and become stiff, possibly causing permanent loss of motion in the joint
Fowler's position
One of the basic positions in which the head of the bed is elevated to between 45 and 60 degrees; variations include semi-Fowler's (low Fowler's) position and high Fowler's position

A term used to describe the force created when two surfaces (such as a sheet and a person's skin) rub against each other; can lead to skin breakdown

One of the basic positions in which the person lies on his side with his head turned to one side and his knee sharply bent and supported by a pillow; the corresponding arm is bent at the elbow with the hand in front of the face, palm down, resting on a pillow; the lower leg is straight and the lower arm extends out from the side with the hand down near the hips and the palm turned upward
Supine (dorsal recumbent) position
One of the basic positions in which the person lies on his back, with the bed flat and the head supported by a pillow
Supportive devices
Devices used when positioning a person to help the person maintain proper body alignment, such as pillows or rolled sheets, towels, or blankets
Transfer belt (gait belt)
A webbed or woven belt with a buckle that is used to assist a weak or unsteady person with standing, walking, or transferring; called a gait belt when used to help a person walk
Transfer
To move a person from one place to another; for example, from the bed to a wheelchair
Weight bearing
A term used to refer to a person's ability to stand on one or both legs
