complementary angle
Two angles are Complementary when they add up to 90 degrees
diameter
A straight line going through the center of a circle connecting two points on the circumference.
equivalent equation
Equivalent Equations are the equations that have the same solution.
identity
An equation that is true no matter what values are chosen.
inconsistent equation
two or more equations that are impossible to solve based on using one set of values for the variables.
interval notation
a way of writing the set for an interval using theinterval's endpoints and [] or () around the endpoints depending on whither the endpoint is included or not respectively. The endpoints must be in increasing order.
linear equation
an equation between two variables that gives a straight line when plotted on a graph
linear inequality
aninequality which involves a linear function. Alinear inequality contains one of the symbols ofinequality: < is less than. > is greater than. ≤ is less than or equal to.
multiplication property of equality
states that if you multiply both sides of an equation by the same number, the sides remain equal (i.e.equality is preserved).
multiplicative inverse
one of a pair of numbers whose product is 1: the reciprocal of 2/3 is 3/2; the multiplicative inverse of 7 is 1/7
negative multiplication property of inequality
When we multiply both a and b by a positive number, the inequality stays the same. But when we multiply both a and b by a negativenumber, the inequality swaps over! Here are the rules: If a < b, and c is positive, then ac < bc.
quotient
a result obtained by dividing one quantity by another.
radius
a straight line from the center to the circumference of a circle or sphere.
solving
The process of finding the number or numbers that make an equation a true statement.
supplementary angle
Two Angles are Supplementary if they add up to 180 degrees.
