Absolute Value

Absolute value makes a negative number positive. Positive numbers and 0 are left unchanged. The absolute value of x is written |x|. We write |–6| = 6 and |8| = 8.

Additive Inverse

The opposite of a number. For example, the additive inverse of 12 is –12. The additive inverse of –3 is 3. Formally, the additive inverse of x is –x.

Base

a in the expression ax. For example, 2 is the base in 2^3.

Denominator

The bottom part of a fraction.

Equation

A mathematical sentence built from expressions using one or more equal signs (=).

Evaluate

To figure out or compute.

Exponent

x in the expression ax. For example, 3 is the exponent in 23.

Expression

Any mathematical calculation or formula combining numbers and/or variables using sums, differences, products, quotients (including fractions), exponents, roots, logarithms, trig functions, parentheses, brackets, functions, or other mathematical operations. Expressions may not contain the equal sign (=) or any type of inequality.

Factor

Any integer which divides evenly into a given integer. For example, 8 is a factor of 24.

Formula

An expression used to calculate a desired result, such as a formula to find volume or a formula to count combinations.

Improper Faction

A fraction which has a larger numerator than denominator.

Integer

All positive and negative whole numbers (including zero)

Irrational Number

Real numbers that are not rational. Irrational numbers include numbers such as , , , π, e, etc.

Like Terms

Terms which have the same variables and corresponding powers and/or roots. Like terms can be combined using addition an subtraction.

Mixed Number

A number written as the sum of an integer and a proper fraction. For example, 5¾ is a mixed number.

Model

An equation or a system of equations representing real-world phenomena. Models also represent patterns found in graphs and/or data.

Natural Number

The numbers used for counting. That is, the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.

Negative Number

A real number less than zero. Zero itself is neither negative nor positive.

Numerator

The top part of a fraction.

Positive Number

A real number greater than zero. Zero itself is not positive.

Prime Number

A positive integer which has only 1 and the number itself as factors.

Product

The result of multiplying a set of numbers or expressions.

Rational Number

All positive and negative fractions, including integers and so-called improper fractions. Formally, rational numbers are the set of all real numbers that can be written as a ratio of integers with nonzero denominator.

Reciprocal

The reciprocal of x is . In other words, a reciprocal is a fraction flipped upside down. Multiplicative inverse means the same thing as reciprocal.

Simplify

To use the rules of arithmetic and algebra to rewrite an expression as simply as possible.

Solution

Any and all value(s) of the variable(s) that satisfies an equation, inequality, system of equations, or system of inequalities.

Term

Parts of an expression or series separated by + or – signs, or the parts of a sequence separated by commas.

Variable

A quantity that can change or that may take on different values. Variable also refers to a letter or symbol representing such a quantity.

Whole Number

The numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.
