An active attempt by the driver whose is attempting to avoid apprehension through evasive tactics who after a short period fails to stop after red lights and siren were activated.when

When are pursuits permitted

Only when the necessity of immediate apprehension outweighs the degree on danger created by the unit and in compliance with policy and state laws

Things to consider when initiating a pursuit

Seriousness of crime


The need for immediate apprehension compared to the risk of the public


Speeds involved


Safety of bystanders


Pedestrian and veg traffic volume


Time of day


Weather and road conditions


Familiarity with the area


Quality of radio communication


The need and availability of air support


Capabilities of police vehicle



What can we pursue

**Known or suspected serious felonies****


(attempt murder, murder, mayhem, serious violent sex crimes, robbery, arson, kidnapping, carjacking, ADW, 459 with loss of a lot of money and a 459 series, major narcotics violations, terrorist acts

Surveillance mode

Duration of surveillance mode must be re-evaluated against the reason for pursuit


Used when deputy speeds, suspect speeds or other factors become excessive


Aero will follow suspect vehicle until suspect exits or terminated by watch commander


Once in surveillance mode patrol vehicle shall discontinue pursuit and not be visible


If suspect vehicle does not reduce speeds after a reasonable short time during surveillance mode the operation Shall be discontinued


Once suspect vehicle stops WC can authorize primary unit and one or more back-up units to respond code 3


Surveillance mode used when Unreasonably dangerous conditions exist
