Chemical sterilization
Immersion / soaking of objects in germicidal solution followed by sterile water rinse.
Dry Heat Sterilization
Used to sterilize some sharp instruments certain powders and greasy substances.
Convention gas sterilization: Ethylene Oxide –Sterilization
Used for electrical, plastic, optical wear, and rubber items – e.g. telephones, stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, and other equipment used in isolation rooms.
- Gases are poisonous.
Gas plasma technology: Hydrogen Peroxide gas plasma - Sterilization
- Newer, safer method of sterilizing heat and moisture-sensitive items.
- Items are cleaned, wrapped and placed in a compact mobile unit where low temperature diffuses through the wrapped instruments and kills the microbes and spores.
Autoclave
Provides high temperature steam sterilization under pressure. Most common method, quickest and most convenient for items that can withstand heat and moisture.
Surgical Hand washing
Some members of the surgical team must “scrub in”
Knee or foot pedals
Clean under nails
