Define atrophy
A decrease in the size of cells, resulting in a reduced tissue mass.
What are some common causes of atrophy?
reduced use of the tissue, insufficient nutrition, decreased neurological or hormonal stimulation, & aging
Define hypertrophy
An increase in the size of individual cells, resulting in an enlarged tissue mass.
What are two common causes of hypertrophy?
1) additional work by the tissue
2) excessive hormonal stimulation
Define hyperplasia
An increased number of cells resulting in an enlarged tissue mass.
Name two general circumstances in which hyperplasia occurs.
1) It may be a compensatory mechanism to meet increase demands. 2) It may be pathologic when there is a hormonal imbalance.
Define metaplasia.
Occurs when one mature cell type is replace by a different cell type
