What are paraneoplastic syndromes?
Symptoms not caused by either local or metastaic effects of tumors.
Bronchogenic carcinomas are associated with the development of many different types of paraneoplastic syndromes. TRUE/FALSE
TRUE.
What are these syndromes usually associated with?
The secretion of certain substances by the tumor cells. Ectopic secretion of ACTH may produce Cushing's syndrome, while ectopic secretion of ADH(inappropriate ADH secretion) may produce hyponatremia.
HYpocalcemia can result from what?
From the production of calcitonin, while hypercalcemia can result from the production of parathyroid hormone related peptide(PTHrP).
What is PTHrP?
It is a normal substance produced locally by many different types of tissues. It is distinct from PTH.
Regarding PTHrP, patients with this type of paraneoplastic syndrome have increased Ca+ levels and decreased PTH levels. TRUE/FALSE
TRUE. As a result of decreased PTH production, patients have atrphied parathyroid glands.
What other tumors are associated with the production of PTHrP?
Clear cell carcinomas of the kidney, endometrial carcinoma and transitional carcinomas of the urinary bladder.
Are lung cancers associated with multiple migratory venous thromboses?
Yes.THis migratory thrombitis is called Trousseau's sign and is more classically associated with carcinoma of the pancreas.
What is hypertrophic osteoarthropathy?
It is a syndrome consisting of periosteal new bone formation with or without digital clubbing and joint effusion.
What is hypertrophic osteoarthropathy often associated with?
With lung carcinomas, but it also occurs with other types of pulmonary disease.
What is erythrocytosis often associated with?
With increased erythropoietin levels and some tumors, particularly renal cell carcinoma, hepatocellular carcinomas, cerebellar hemangioblastomas. It is not really associated with bronchogenic carcinomas.
