Androgen
Substance that stimulates the development of male characteristics, such as the hormones testoserone and androsterone
Corpus luteum cyst
A small endocrine structure that develops within a rupturd ovarian follicle and secrets progestrone and strogen.
Cystadenocarcinoma
A malignant tumore that forms cysts
Cystadenoma
A benign adenoma containing cysts
Dermoid tumor
Benign tumor comprised of hair;muscle, teeth, and fat
Endometriosis
A condition that occurs when functioning endometrial tissue invades other sites outside the uterus
Estrogen
The female hormone produced by the ovary
Follicular cyst
Benign cyst within the ovary that may occur & disappear on a cyclic basis
Functional cyst
Results from the normal function of the ovary

Benign tumor of the ovary associated with ascites & pleural effusion
Mucinous cystadenocarcinoma
Malignant tumor of the ovary with multilocular cysts
Mucinous cystadenoma
Benign tumor of the ovary that contains thin-walled multiocular cyst
Ovarian carcinoma
Malignant tumor of the ovary that may spread beyond the ovary & metastasize to other organs via the peritoneal channels
Ovarian torsion
Partialor complete rotation of the ovarian pedicle on its axis
Paraovarian cyst
Cystic sructure that lies adjacent to the ovary
Polycystic ovarian syndrome(PCOS)
Endocrine disorder associated with chronic anovulation
Pulsatility index(PI)
Peak-systolic velocity - (minus) endiastolic velocity /(divided by the) mean velocity
Resistive index(RI)
Peak-systolic velocity - (minus) endiastolic velocity /(divided by the)Peak-systolic velocity
Serous cystadenocarcinoma
Most common type of ovarian carcinoma; may be bilateral with multilucular cysts
Serous cystadenoma
Second most common benign tumor of the ovary; unicular or multilocular
Simple ovarian cyst
Smooth, well defined cystic structure that is filled completely with fluid
Surface epithelial-stromal tumors
Gynecologic tumors that arise from the surface epithelium and cover the ovary and the underluing stroma
Theca-lutein cyst
Multilucular cysts that occur in patients with hyperstimulation (hydatidiform mole and infertility patients)
Androgens
Male hormone
Common cyst or ovarian mass
*follicular cyst
*corpus luteum cyst of pregnancy *cystic teratoma *paraovarian cyst *hydrosalpinx *endometrioma (low-level echoes) *hemorrhagic cyst |
Common complex masses
*cystadenoma
*dermoid cyst *tube-ovarian abscess *ectopic pregnancy *granulosa cell tumor |
Common solid masses
*solid teratoma(a tumor composed of various tissues such as bone, hair, and teeth not normally found together at the site of origin and probably derived from embryonic remnants.
They most often occur in the ovary, where they are benign, and in the testis, where they are malignant.) *adenocarcinoma *arrhenoblastoma *fibroma *dysgerminoma *torsion |
Functional cysts
Functional cysts result from the normal function of the ovary. they are the most common cause of ovarian enlargment in young wemon. functional cyst include: -follicular -corpus luteum -hemorrhagic -theca-lutein cyst(>5cm)
Folicular cysts
A follicular cyst forms when a mature folicle fails to ovulate or involute. these cyst are usually unilateral, asymptomatic, and less than 2cm in diameter.
*occur when a dominant follicle does not succeed on ovulating and remains active though immature *usually unilateral *thin-walled, translucent, watery fluid, may project above or within surface of the ovary *may grow 1 to 8 cm *usually disappear spontaneously by resorption or rupture *clinical:asymptomatic to dull, adnexal pressure and pain, abnormal ovarian function, tortion of the ovary resulting in sever pain *sonographic finding:simple cyst |
corpus luteum cysts
Corpus luteum cysts result from failur of absorption or from excess bleeding into the corpus luteum.(>4cm).often pain.
*result from hemorrhage within a persistently mature corpus luteum *filled with blood and cystic fluid * may grow 1-10 cm in size *may accompany intrauterine pregnancy(IUP) *clinical:irregular menstural cycle, pain, mimic ectopic pregnancy, rupture *sonographic finding:"cystic" type of lesion; may have internal echoes secandary to hemorrhage |
