Function of Liver

Neurologic symptoms of liver dysfunction

-confusion


-MM tremors


-hyperactive reflexes


-asterixis (flapping tremor)


-musculoskeletal pain (R scap, trap, shoulder)

Hepatitis

-acute or chronic inflammation of the liver


A - caused by consumption of feces


B - blood-borne, increased risk of cancer


C - blood-borne, chronic, increased risk of cancer

Chronic Hepatitis

-viral


-symptoms mild fatigue, loss of appetite


-diagnosis based on serologic testing, liver biopsy



Stages of Hepatits

Initial (before jaundice) - up to 3 weeks


Icteric (jaundice) -1-3 weeks


Recovery - 3-4 months

Cirrhosis

-chronic end-stage of liver disease


-caused by drugs, hepatitis (C), alcohol


-liver necrosis then scarring and nodules, then portal hypertension

Portal Hypertension

-increased hepatic pressure over 6 mmhg


-blood flow in veins reverse and blood flows into the viscera


-leads to gastroesophageal varices

Pancreatitis

-serious inflammation


-autodigestion of pancreas


-acutely caused by alcoholism


-symptoms are gallstones, pain/swollen abdomen


-resolves on its own

Treatment of chronic pancreatitis

-relieve pain


-monitor diet (high carbs/low fat)


-insulin (if DM develops)

Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer

-no symptoms early


-pain in upper abdomen


-jaundice


-dark urine


-vomitting


-loss of appetite


-weight loss

Cholecystitis

-inflammation of gall bladder


-impacted gallstones


-symptoms include pain in abdomen/shoulder occurring after meals, fever, vomitting

Treatment for Cholecystitis

-gall bladder removal

Whipple Procedure

-treatment for pancreatic cancer


-take out head of pancreas, small intestine, bile duct, and stomach

Total pancreatectomy

-entire pancreas, small intestine, stomach ,bile ducts, gallbladder, spleen, lymph nodes are removed
