What is the difference b/t plasma and serum?
Serum does not have fibrinogen.
What is the normal range for plasma proteins?
6.5-8.3 g/dl
What are total globulins and what is a normal range?
The difference b/t total protein and albumin (2-3.5 g/dl)
What is electrophoresis? /Can you give an example of its use?
Protein fractions are separated in distinct zones when an electric current is applied to the sample on a solid support in a buffer solution./ It detects variations in Ig's.
What is the normal serum value for prealbumin?
40 mg/dl
What is the normal range for albumin?
3.5-4.5 g/dl
What is the role of haptoglobin(a type of alpha-globulin)?
It combines with Hb (which is released from rbc lysis) to preserve iron.
What is the major component of beta globulin and what is its action?
Transferrin- transports ferric ions from the intracellular ferritin to the bone marrow (this is where erythroid precursors have transferrin receptors). Measured as Iron Binding Capacity.
What is the most abundant coag. factor (is also an acute phase reactant)- and how is it measured?
Fibrinogen, it's measured by functional assay.
Compare transudate to exudate.
Transudate is body fluid that contains albumin and little protein. Exudate is an effusion (body fluid) much richer in protein, and has increased vascular permeability.
What does the erythrocyte sedimentation rate measure?
It's a nonspecific indicator of inflammation- the larger the increase of size of rbc's, the more severe the inflammation.
In what diseases are high levels of Lactate Dehydrogenase detected?
megaloblastic anemia, extensive neoplasia, severe shock, hypoxia (also wbc disorders, plumonary and MI- but not as high).
What is a normal lab value for creatine kinase (CK)?
55-170 micromol/L in M (less in F)
What test results are consistent with hepatocellular damage?
elevated AST and ALT, normal (or small incr.) in alkaline phosphatase, GGT, and 5'N
What is a normal range for amylase?
35-115 U/L
What is a normal lab value for lipase, and what is it a marker for?
36-239 U/L- pancreatic disease.
