How is radiographic sensitivity determined?
with the use of IQIs. Put the IQi on the specimen and perform the radiographic procedure. The IQI will have left an image and the sensitivity can be determined
What is microfocus radiography used for?
- The beam of electrons is focused to a point on the target material.
- This eliminates the geometric unsharpness and means the image can be enlarged by moving the object closer to the source and increasing the intensity or exposure time.
What are the disadvantages of EMATs?
- not as efficient as piezoelectronic transducers
- not as sensitive as piezoelectronic transducers
What precaution is necessary for eddy current inspection?
The specimen needs to be saturated first. This is done by placing it in a large magnetic field so that the magnetic permeability doesn't change.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the EC method?
+ non-contact
+ the probe can be very small to access complex geometries
+ highly sensitive to surface breaking cracks
- a direct site is not determined
- sensitive to electrical properties of material
How is the centre frequency of a compressional transducer determined?
The crystal thickness determines the centre frequency by λ=2*thickness
What is the inverse distance law?
I1/I2 = (L2/L1)^2
