A group of words with a subject and verb that CANNOT stand alone as a sentence.
CLAUSE (Dependent-Subordinate)
A word that shows the action in a sentence.
Verb (Action verb)
A word that is a PERSON, PLACE, THING, or IDEA.
NOUN
A word that substitutes or takes the place of a noun in a sentence.
PRONOUN
A word that connects the subject of the sentence to a noun that renames it or adjective that describes it.
LINKING VERB
A noun or pronoun that DOES the action of a sentence or is described in a sentence.
SUBJECT
A word that describes a noun or pronoun by describing which one? how many? or what kind?
ADJECTIVE
A group of words with a subject and a verb that stands alone as a sentence.
CLAUSE (Independent Clause)
A word that describes a verb, adjective, or adverb by describing when? where? how? how often? or to what extent?
ADVERB
A word that connects two other words, phrases, or clauses.
CONJUNCTION
A group of words with NO subject, NO verb, or neither a subject nor verb.
PHRASE
A word, generally set apart from the rest of the sentence that expresses strong emotion.
INTERJECTION
A little word that connects one word to a noun, adding further information about the first word.
