He made his journey to Mexico to seek gold and claim land for Spain. He established a base at Veracruz and proceeded to march inland toward Tenochitilan, capital city of empire controlled by Aztec Indians. the Spainards were welcomed by Montezuma, the Azec emperor. they later seized and impriosned him, however, massacred. Many ztec nobles, conquered the city and took possession of its teasures of gold and silver. Cortes added Mexico to Spanish Empire (1519-1521)
