Symbiosis

The living together of any two organisms – association that exists between organisms of different species

sym

means together

biosis

means living

Predator/prey

usually a short relationship results in harm or death to one organism to the benefit of the other

ex. fox kills a rabbit lion

Phoresis

One member of the relationship is carried around by the second

Phore

Means to carry

Mutualism

both members of the association benefit from it

Commensalism

One member of the assocation benefits and the other ember neither benefits nor is harmed

Parasitism

One member of the association (the parasite) lives in or on the second member 1. the parasite benefits from the relationship 2. the host is harmed by the relationship 3. the parasite is dependent on the host

Definitive host

The host in which a parasite reaches its sexual maturity

Intermediate Host

the host n which some development of the parasite occurs but in which it does not reach maturity

Transport or paratenic Host

The host in which a parasite may enter and undergoes no development but continues to stay alive and be infective to a definitive host

Reservoir Host

an animal other than the animal being treated for infection that is normally infected with that parasite in the environment

Ectoparasite

Lives ON the body of the host

Endoparasite

Lives INSIDE the body of the host

Vector

any agent such as water or an insect that transmits a disease organism

Biological

Vector which a disease organism lives or develops

Mechanical Vector

Vector that transmits disease organisms by mechanical means only

Life cycle

The entire life cycle of the parasite is completed in a single host followed by transmission of the offspring to another host

Indirect

two or more hosts are required to complete the life cycle of the parasite followed by the transmission of the offspring to another host

Prepatent period

the period of time from introduction of the infective form from until the parasite can be demonstrated by recognized laboratory techniques

Erratic or aberrant parasite

parasite that wanders away from its usual site of infection to an organ or location where it does not ordinarily live

Incidental parasite

when a parasite occurs in a host in which it does not usually live

Facultative parasite

organisms that can be free living or can live parasitically. Ex. many nematodes

Obligarory parasite

parasite that can not live on its own -must live in or on a host. The most common type of veterinary parasite are obligatory.

Periodic parasite

parasite does not live on or in the host all the tim makes periodic visits to host usually to feed ex. female mosquito

Psudoparasite

creature or object that are not parasitic but are erroneously identified as parasites

ex. things seen in fecal flotations that may look like parasite eggs (pollen, grains etc)
