Piroplasms
Indirect - Vector & Vertebrate
- Ixodid tick usually vector, bite injects sporozoites
Only Asexual stage in verts, first gen in RBC
Babesia
Babesiosis, each sp with spec host
Tick innoc sporozoites w/bit
- Directly infect host RBC -> piroplasms -> merozoites by binar fission in 2/4 daughter cells
No schizogony, unlim generations, some turn into gametocytes

Tick takes up infected RBC, gametocytes fuse, form motile zygote (kinete)
Kinete invades tick tissues (saliv glands, ovaries), is transoviral.
Sprogony in salivary glands

Iatrogenic tans via bld/fighting possible

Teardrop shape in RBC
Canine babesiosis
B canis vogeli/gibsoni/conradae
Endemic areas, kennels, in S-SE US

Usually young dogs, 1-3 wks post bite
Intra/extra vascular rbc hemolysis
- Regenerative anemia, hemoglobinuria/inemia, icterus, DIC

Blood smear, serology

Tx - Imidocarb diproprionate, can revcover from acute w/o tx
Bovine babesiosis
B. bigemina, eradicated from US after cattle dipping eradicated Boophilus annulatus vector
One-host tick (all stage on same animal)
Is in Mexico
Equine babesiosis
Biliary fever - B. caballi, B. equi (smaller, more prevalent)
Vector: Dermacentor
Tropic/subtropics, reportable in USA
Signs 5-21 dpi, rare peracute fatal 1-2days
Dx - parasite in rbc, serology
Tx - Imizol, may need transfusion
Theileria spp
Theileriosis - not in US. Production animals - cow/water bufallo
T. parva - East Coast Fever
- Tink inoculated salivary sporozoites enter T/B lympho, + pathogen, calves more resis than adult
8-15 days PI - fever, nasal discharge, + ln, bldy d+

Multiple forms in blood smear

Signs - Acute lethargy, anorexia, icterus, fever, decr CRT, dyspnea, death in weeks w/o tx

Hematology - Normochromic anemia, leukpenia, lymphopenia, thrimbocytopenia

+spleen, +liver, +ln, renal edema, lung edema/congstion, venous distension
Cytauxzoon felis
Cytauxzoonosis - domestic cat, Reservoir - Bobcat (sub-clin persist)
- Vector - Ixodid

Sporozoites - inoc via tick bite
Schizogony - in macro in body (spleen/liver)
Merozoites - enter rbcs -> piroplasm, eaten by ticks
- Diff into gametes, fust to form zygote, ookinete
Plasmodium
Primate, rodent, reptile, bird
Bird malaria - culcine mosquito vector
- Mosq inco sporozoite -> enters hepatocyte -> pre-RBC merogony -> merozoite release, infect RBC->
merogony ->release merozoites invade more RBC or become micro/macro gemtocytes that infect mosquito
-> form zygote in mosquito, then ookinete -> invades midgut wall ->oocyst -> ruptures, 1000s sporozoites in hemocoel
-> migrate to salivary gland

Birds - chills, fever, anemia, + liver, gametocytes also in RBCS
Dx - paraiste in blood smear
Leucocytozoon
Blackfly vector. Affects Ducks, Geese
- megaloschizonts in parenchymal & RE cells, all major organs
- Anorexia, dyspnea, + liver, anemia, death
- Gametocytes in/distort WBC
Haemoproteus
Biting midge vector, in bird spp
Low pathogenicity
Merogony in endothelial bv cells
Gametocytes develop in RBC
