Amoeba
Acanthopodia - Spike-like pseudopods
Lobopodia - Large, blunt pseudopodia
Definitions: Sexual Phases
Schizogony -Asexual repro by multiple fission
- Apicomplexans

Sporogony - Asexual repro within oocyst
- Apicomplexans

Cyst - non-motile, transmission state

Trophozoite - Active, motile, growing stage
Entamoeba histolytica
Amoebic dysentery: non-host specific

Luminal - No signs

Invasive Intestinal - ameoba attach to epith cells, lyse them and intracell. junctions
- Secretory d+, colitis, dysentery
- flask-shaped ulcers

Invasive extraintestinal - rare, invades liver, peritoneum, etc

Life Cycle: Direct. Accidental ingestion of cyst by host in food/water contam by feces
- Mature cyst: 4 nuclei, in lower gut
- Releases 4 trophozoites
- Binary fission, form cysts, pass in feces

Usually humans -> pets

Morphology - Trophozoite: Carwheel nucleus w/ endosome, "spokes", blunt pseudopods
Cyst - Chromatoid bodies in cytoplasm - cigar shaped, rounded, 4 nuclei

Tx - Metronidazole
Entamoeba invadens
Reptilian, similar to E. histolytica, severe for captive snakes/tortoises
D+, anorexia, listlessness
Multifocal hepatic necrosis

Trophozoite more active at room temp
Acanthamoeba
Free-living: water, soil, sewage
Accident parasite - resp/ skin break
- Hematogenous spread possible
- Immunocompromised people

Humans - chronic keratitis (contacts)
Granulomatous amoebic encephalitis
Dog - epizootic in greyhounds
- 35% mortality - chronic ganulomatous infect, pneumonia/meningitis (neuro signs), oculonasal discharge

Trophozoite (asexual repro)/cyst
- Pointed pseudopodia, look like macro, "bulls-eye

Tx - None
Naegleria fowleri
Free living - mainly humans (accidental)
- Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (hemorrhagic necrotizing, all fatal), thermally enriched H2O

Trophozoite/cyst enter nasal cavity
- CNS via olfactory nerve, can infect lungs

Dx - ID in CSF/brain biopsy
Tx - Amphotericin B
Ciliophora - Balantidium suis
Swine commensal, zoonotic human pathogen (B. coli)
- Increase in swine dysentery
Direct cycle, fecal-oral thick-walled cyst trans.
Trophozoite in colon lumen
- No signs/lesions
- Large macromolecules, tiny nucleus
Ichthyophthirius multifiliis
Ich (White Spot Disease) - Fish
- Small white dots on skin/gills
- Large ciliate leaves host - forms repro cyst, prod + tomites (free-swimming, 48 hrs to find host, tx works)
