Paradise Lost focuses on the divide between Glorious Heaven and Dreadful Hell

Glorious Heaven - Dreadful Hell

Paradise Lost also focuses on the ascent or descent of man. This defines goodness.

God created the universe out of himself, therefore everyone has goodness in them. We choose how far or close we stay or descend from goodness.

Milton believes that we shouldn't be beaten into obedience and that we should choose whether to obey.

We should have free will

Choosing not to obey will result in torment but Milton says we should have that choice.

To do wrong you shall know how good it would have been to have not wronged.

Milton was influenced by the classic epics: The Iliad, The Odyssey, etc.

Paradise Lost is written in blank verse and iambic pentameter.
