Introduction

Explanations for Differences in Educational Attainment by Ethnicity:

Material Deprivation

It is a key factor when trying to explain differences in Educational Attainment by Ethnicity.

-Around 40% of those identifying as Black or Black British (the lowest preforming ethnic groups within the Education system), are living in poverty, compared to White British which is under half that figure.

Such material disadvantage means they face a similar range of problems to those of the poorest sections of the Working-Class which they belong.

In contrast, the percentage of Indian & Chinese (who are at the highest performing Ethnic Groups in the Education system) eligible for free school meals is below average, and they are more likely to come from business and professional middle class family backgrounds, thereby gaining the benefits that being Middle-Class gives in Education.

Thus, differences between ethic groups in Educational Attainment may have less to do with Ethnicity as such, and more to do with Social and Economic disadvantage.

{In the Exam, you can use the material factors relating to Social Class in relation to Ethnicity.}

>However, Gillborn & Mirza: Have Found that whilst Social Class remains the the main influence on Educational Attainment, Social Class Factors do not completely override the influence of Ethnic inequality.

Some pupils from the same social class background but from different ethnic groups still marked inequalities in attainment:

°Middle-Class White British students will often outperform Middle-class Black Caribbean students.

°When comparing those from the same Social Class background, Indian Asian and Chinese students are doing better than White British students, whilst Black Caribbean, Pakistani and Bangladeshi students are doing worst.
