The Atrium
Thin-walled and elastic and stretches as it collects blood. It only has to pump the short distance to the Ventricle therefore has only a thin muscular wall. Top part of the heart
The Ventricle
Has a much thicker muscular wall as it has to pump the blood some distance, either to the lungs or rest of the body.
Bicuspid Valves
Left atrioventricular valves formed of two cup-shaped flaps on the left side of the heart
Tricuspid Valves
Right atrioventricular valves formed of three cup-shaped flaps on the right side of the heart
The Aorta
Connected to the left ventricle and carries oxygenated blood to all parts of the body except the lungs
The Vena Cava
Connected to the right atrium and brings deoxygenated blood back from the tissues of the body
The Pulmonary Arteries
Connected to the right ventricle and carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs, where its oxygen is replenished and its carbon dioxide is removed. unusually for an artery, it carries deoxygenated blood
The Pulmonary Veins
Connected to the left atrium and brings oxygenated blood back from the lungs. Unusually for a vein, it carries oxygenated blood.
Coronary Arteries
Arteries that supply blood to the cardiac muscle of the heart
Myocardial Infarction
Heart Attack
Atrioventricular Valves
Between the left atrium and ventricle and the right atrium and ventricle. Prevent backflow of blood
Semi-lunar Valves
In the aorta and pulmonary artery. Prevent backflow into the ventricles.
Pocket Valves
In the veins. Occur throughout the venous system. Ensure when veins are squeezed blood flows back to the heart.
Cardiac output =
(equation) |
heart rate x stroke volume
Atheroma
Fatty deposits within the wall of an artery. Reduces lumen therefore constricts blood flow
Thrombosis
If an antheroma breaks through the lining of the blood vessel, and forms a rough surface that itterupts the optherwise smooth flow of blood. creates blood clot
Aneurysm
Atheromas that lead to the formation of thrombus weaken the artery walls. Weakened poins swell to form a balloon-like, blood filled structure which eventually burst .. A brain aneurysm is known as a stroke.
