What is pagets?
#1 Metabolic bone disease. "Bone Physiology on speed." Rapid absorption of bone stimulates osteoblasts to rapidly lay down new osteoid. w/ less integrity. The new bone created by osteoblasts is "crappy bone." Eventually the absorption of bone wins. A lot of pain associated with the disease. Considered a comorbidity.
Who gets pagets?
More men than women. People from the UK are more likely to get it and believed to be caused by a slow virus.
How does paget's differ from osteosarcoma?
Paget's is a slow progressing disease.
Why do patients w/ Paget's have problems with headaches?
A lot of bone deposited on the outside and inside of skull. Bones in ear can be affected leading to hearing loss, neuro problems, cranial nerves affected by the bone deposition around them
What do people with Paget's die from?
Heart Failure. If you have all this extra cellular activity, more blood flow is needed. There is a tremendous amount of blood going into the bone marrow which steals blood from your brain. Heart has to work harder b/c the decrease of blood flow.
