What's the difference between a MAC and a IP address ?

A MAC is assigned when the device is created

A MAC is totally unique to that device

A MAC cannot be changed

A IP is assigned when a device joins a network

A IP is unique to only that network

A IP is often changed

What is a packet ?

Before being sent over a network, data is split into small segments called Packets

This makes data transmission more reliable

Each packet has a header that contains where it is going who it is from and the position in its original message

Network addressing( IP)

When a device joins a network is it given a unique ip address so data can be sent to the correct device. BUT devices on different networks can have the same IP address

Network Addressing (MAC)

Every network adapter/device is given a unique MAC address when it is created. But this address is the only one in the world

What is a protocol.

A protocol is a set of rules which governs the transmission of data. It's like a highway code but for data transmission.

With protocols, packets would get collided up and get lost.
