Describe that conduction is a process of energy transfer by heating.

The electrons in piece of metal can leave their atoms and move about in the metal as free electrons. The ions are packed closely together and they vibrate continually. The hotter the metal, the more kinetic energy these vibrations have.

Explain that non-metals are generally poor conductors because they rely on atomic vibrations to carry energy.

Non-metals have fewer free electrons so they cannot conduct heat as easily.

Give examples of some metals that are good conductors of energy.

Copper, silver, aluminium.

List some poor conductors or insulators.

Bronze, mercury
