Force, Persuasion, Manipulation, Exchange

Force

Thisis the exercise of power by physical means. (war, terrorism, violence, riots,assault)

Persuasion

Nonphysical.The person makes it know that they are attempting to influence you. (lobbying,speechmaking, debating, court decisions, federalist papers)

Manipulation

Nonphysical. Theperson who is attempting to influence you is attempting to conceal theirefforts as well. (Regan)

Exchange

Thisis the use of power through incentives. (Tax credit for going solar, parkingfor clean air vehicles only, etc.)

Hard Power

Force of any kind.

Soft Power

Any nonphysical form of power.

Legitimacy

This is a mass perception that a government’srule is rightful. (Thomas Paine questioned the legitimacy of KingGeorge III.)

Sovereignty

The power of the government to rule over itsterritory. (External and Internal)

Authority

Thisis the psychological ability to get others to obey them. (Respect for aleader)

Biological Explanation for Power

Aristotle believed that men were political animals. Marxclaimed men were “species beings.” Obeying leaders is innate. Why do people disobey?

Psychological Explanation for Power

Peopleare natural conformists. They have a need to conform and fit intogroups.

Cultural Explanation for Power

Humanbehavior is learned, not inherited.

Rational Choice Explanation for Power

Peopleknow what they want most of the time and they have a good reason.
