What is osmosis?

The movement of water from a high concentration to a low concentration across a partially permeable membrane.

In which direction will the movement of water be?

In which direction will the movement of water be?

From the right side to the left side.

This is because the left side is a more concentrated solution and so it diluted.

What is active transport?

Active transport uses energy from respiration to move things against the concentration gradient.

Give an example of active transport.

Some plants need to get nutrients from the soil that are only there at very low concentrations.

Why is osmosis important in plants?

To gain water through their roots.

Water in plant cells makes them turgid or stiff so that are able to hold the plant upright.

Why is osmosis important in animals?

If osmosis into an animal cell is too great, the animal cell would swell and burst as they do not have a cell wall.

What does partially permeable mean?

Only let some things through. i.e Cell membrane

What is a solute?

The substance that dissolves.

i.e Salt or sugar.

What is the solvent?

The liquid that the substance is dissolved in.

i.e Water or alcohol.
