What does APGAR Stand for?
Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiratory effort
What is protocol if the APGAR score is less than 7 at 5 minutes
Scoring would then continue every five minutes until the newborn stabilizes or until 20 minutes have passed since birth.
What is the order in which the APGAR is assessed?
Pulse, Respiratory, Activity, Grimace, Appearance
What are the scores for pulse rate?
absent= 0
less than 100= 1
over 100 = 2
What are the scores for respiratory effort?
absent= 0
Slow, irregular, gasping, weak cry = 1
good; strong cry = 2
What are the scores for Activity?
(MUSCLE TONE)
flaccid = 0
Some flexion of the extremities = 1
Active motion; flexed arms and legs which resist tension = 2
What are the scores for Grimace?
(Reflex irritability)
no response to stimulation = 0
feeble cry when stimulated = 1
strong cry; pulls away or sneezes when stimulated with catheter in nare = 2
What are the scores for Appearance?
(SKIN COLOR)
pallor/cyanosis = 0
Pink body, blue extremities = 1
completely pink = 2
What do the three tiers of scores indicate?
Tier 1: 0-3 indicates poor clinical status/ severe distress

Tier 2: 4-6 indicates fair status, moderate difficulty adjusting to extrauterine life

Tier 3: 7-10 indicates minimal or no difficulty adjusting to extrauterine life
