Caries Risk Factors
The cu1Tently accepted theories relatedto the action of fluoride in
the oral cavity are; I) increasing the resistance of the tooth structure to acid dissolution 2)
enhancement of the process ofremineralization and 3) reduction of the cariogenic potential of dental
plaque
Mechanisms of action of fluoride
BIS-GMA resins that are placed on the occlusal surfaces of teeth having deep pits and
fissures, in order to prevent the development of caries. The technique involves acid-etching the
enamel surface in order to provide a retentive surface for the adherence of the resin. Both light-cured
and chemically-cured materials are available.
Sealants
the pattern in which the teeth appear in the oral cavity
