What depletes Jing?
being seriously ill- i.e cancer, drugs, drinking, partying too hard
Eight principles
represent the four pairs of polarities that provide a description of the nature and strength of the disease.

Interior, exterior
deficient, excessive
cold, hot
yin, yang
Interior/Exterior
relates to the depth of the pathogenic factor, interior is chronic and deep, while exterior is invading from outside acute
Deficient/Excessive
relates to the strength of the pathogenic factor to the strength of the body
Cold/Hot
relates to the nature of the pathogenic factor
Yin/Yang
relates to the overall quality of the pathogenic factor
Interior
The pathogenic factor has entered teh interior
a direct attack of the pathogen into the Zang/Fu
A dysfunction of the Zang/Fu or Seven emotions
Most often severe, deep and chronic
Changes in the stool or urine, high fever with no fear of codl, fever without chills, chills without fever
Tongue- change in tongue body
Pulse- Sinking, deep, strong
Exterior
The condition is generated by an external pathogenic influence.
Sudden onset, short duration, can progress into the interior headache, rhinorrhea
Chills, fever, sore limbs, runny nose, coughing, sore throat, aversion to cold, wind or heat
Tongue- Thin moss
Pulse- floating
Possible variations of of Internal with 8 principles
Internal/ cold
Internal/heat
Internal/Deficiency
Internal/Excess
Internal/Cold
chills, cold limbs, absense of thirst, loose stools, clear or profuse urine
Internal/heat
high fever, thirst, irritability and restlessness, flushed face, red eyes, constipation, deep, yellow scanty urine
tongue- red body, yellow coat
pusle- rapid, excess
Internal/deficiency
feeble breathing, apathy, general lassitude, palpitations, dizziness
Tongue: Pale body, thin, white coat
Pulse: Deep,deficient
Internal/excess
Coarse breathing, sonorous voice, irritability, fullness in chest, abdominal distension, constipation
Tongue- rough body, thick coat
Pulse- deep excess
Variations on Exterior
Exterior/cold
Exterior/heat
Exterior/deficiency
Exterior/excess
Exterior/cold
fever, chills, no sweat

tongue- thin yellow coat
pulse- superficial, rapid
Exterior/heat
fever with intolerance to wind, may have sweaing, little thirst
tongue- thin yellow coat
pulse- superfical,rapid
exterior/deficiency
sweating, intolerance to wind
tongue- thin, white coat
pulse- superficial slow
exterior/excess
no sweat, general aching

tongue- white coat
pulse- superficial forceful
Deficient/ Excess
excess and deficiency represent the quantitative aspect of the Qi
deficiency represents a syndrome that manifests itself through a decrease in the client's general resistance
excess represents a syndrome that manifests itself when the excesses are particularly strong
It is normal that an organ will show fullness in its own season
Deficient
When the pernicious influence is strong and the function of the body is weak
deficiency of substances(qi,blood, jing, body fluids)
underactivity of the yin and yang aspects of the organs
chronic condition, listlessness, pallor, apathy, feeble breathing, shortness of breath, tinnitus, poor memory, spontaneous sweating, nocturnal emissions, pain relievedby pressure, clear urine, weight loss, diarrhea, incontinence, vomiting, spermatorrhea, asthma
tongue- pale with a thin coat
pulse- deficient
Excess
When the strength of the pernicious influence causes accumulation of Qi and blood
body functions become overactive
red face, restlessness, loud (sonorous) voice, hot skin, abdominal pain aggravated by pressure, constipation, fever, irritability, fullness and distention in the chest or abdomen, heavy breathing, painful or difficult urination, acute condition, no perspiration
tongue- thick coat
pulse- strong full
Cold
Cold symptoms develop when the boys is attacked by yin excess or the yang activity is weak
cold aggravates fullness of yin and emptiness of yang
cold improves an emptiness in yin and aggravates a fullness of yang
cold aggravates any stagnation either yin or yang
Symptoms and Signs of Cold
Pale complexion, lassitude, tendency to curl up, cold in any part of the body, feeling of cold, lack of thirst, desire for hot drinks, severe localized pain, diarrhea, clear urine and the time to urinate takes longer than usual
Tongue: Pale body, white coat
Pulse: slow
Variations of cold
excess/cold and deficient/cold
Excess/cold
slow movement, ponderous, forceful, aversion to cold, limbs are cold, pain is improved with heat and worse with pressure, clear scanty urine
tongue- pale npdu, with a thick white moist coat
Pulse: slow and strong
Deficient/cold
frail, slow movement, weak aversion to cold, pain is improved with heat and pressure, no spirit, copious clear urine
Tongue- pale puffy body with a thin coat
Pulse- slow, weak, thin, frail, minute
Heat
The hot symptoms will develop when the body is attacked by a yang excess or when the yin substance is depleted
heat aggravates fullness of yang and aggravates an emptiness of yin
heat improves an emptiness of yang and improves a fullness of yin
heat improves any stagnation either yin or yang
Symptoms and signs of heat
flushed face, ever, red eyes, heat can be in any part of the body, thirst for cold drinks, constipation, scanty dark urine, turbid or thick secretions
Tongue: dark red body
Pulse: rapid
Possible variations of heat
excess/ heat
deficiency/ heat
Excess/ heat
high fever, fast, strong movements, delirium, pressure applied tot he area worsens the condition, desires cold dark scanty urine, constipation
tongue- red body, thick yellow coat
pulse- rapid and full
Deficient/ heat
Afternoon fever, weakness, rapid nervous movement, night sweats, warm palms and soles, insomnia, dizziness, and dark urine
Tongue: red body with a little coat
Pulse: thin and rapid
Yin/ Yang
most clients exhibit a complex misture of yin and yang signs and symptoms
Yin
This pattern is associated with Deficiency, Interior and/or Cold
Signs and symptoms of Yin
slow, obsessive, frail, nervous, shortness of breath, shallow respiration, reduced appetite, withdrawn, likes to curl up, think watery secretions and a calculating meticulous personality
Collapse of yin
Shortness of Breath, breath is rapid, sticky sweat, flushed face, thirst, likes cold drinks, hot skin, warm hands and feet, dislikes heat and restlessness
Tongue- red and a dry coat
pulse- deficient and rapid
Collapse of Yang
feeble breathing, profuse cold sweat, likes hot drinks, cool skin, cold limbs, dislikes cold, listless
Tongue- pale and a moist coat
Pulse- thready deficient fading
Qi/ Chi/ Ki/ Prana
basic substance of the universe, everything is the result of the movement of qi
Yang Qi
function- sky, stars
Yin Qi
material earth
yang and yin before and after man
yang and yin had nothing in common but man is a clay- yin body with a yang spirit
Qi = mC squared
Narrow meaning of Qi
life force-vital energy
prenatal qi- born with
post natal qi- everything else
Qi is
the source of all movement
protects
source of harmonious transformation
retains body structure
warms body
function in body - liver makes liver qi
qi runs the machine
Types of Qi
Yuan Qi, Zong Qi, Zhen Qi, Ying Qi, Wei Qi, Zheng Qi, Zong qi, Gu qi, Xie Qi, Zang fu qi
Yuan qi (original qi)
prenatal qi, spark of life, resides in the kidneys, motive force of life, close relationship with jing, source points hold yuan qi, lung 9 is a reboot point
Zong Qi (gathering qi)
post natal, gathering qi from the spleen and lung formed in the chest, oxygenation of blood, nourishes the heart and the lungs
Zhen qi (true qi)
found in the meridians, very refined, controlled by the lungs
What do the lungs do?
The lungs move qi
Ying Qi ( nutritive qi)
is yin nourishes internal organs
Wei Qi (defensive Qi)
yang in nature - it is our immunity ,will turn on fever to kill pathogen, say- surface outer layer of skin, night deep in body
promotes sweating, warms and moistens, nourishes skin and muscles
Zheng Qi( anti-pathogenic qi/ upright qi)
good qi, anywhere in the body general immunity
Zong Qi
middle burner qi, function of the spleen and stomach, function of digestion
Gu qi ( food qi)
bit refined must be transformed
Xie Qi (Evil Qi)
pathogenic qi- 6 forms of evil - 6 exogenous, cold, damp comes from teh outside dryness, wind, summer heat, fire
6 exogenous forms of evil qi
cold, damp, dryness, wind, summer-heat, fire
Internal Evils- come from within
